Catharanthine is a naturally occurring monoterpenoid indole alkaloid primarily isolated from the plant Catharanthus roseus (commonly known as Madagascar periwinkle). It is one of several alkaloids biosynthesized in this plant and plays a key intermediate role in the production of clinically important anti-cancer compounds.

Catharanthine is derived biosynthetically from strictosidine, a key intermediate in the monoterpene indole alkaloid biosynthetic pathway. In Catharanthus roseus, catharanthine is enzymatically coupled with vindoline to produce vinblastine and vincristine, two potent anticancer agents used in chemotherapy.
